Running, through December 19, 2009, at Philadelphia’s Wood Turning Center is Steve Madsen: A World in Wood. Madsen fell for wood carving in 7th grade, and by the 9th he decided to get serious. This retrospective exhibition is organized by the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey, and is a microcosm of early craft shows. Madsen’s career coincides with the rise of lathe turning as an art and the disappearance of exotic woods.
