Famous for painting the first post office mural (Progress and Industry) for the WPA, Charles W. Ward spent his career depicting laborers in Mexico and his native Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He called his works “paintings for the people,” honest, insightful pieces influenced by the modernist palate. A retrospective of Ward’s work is now on view at the James A. Michener Art Museum through February 14, 2010.

Further example of Ward’s painting after the jump.
