Cal Lane first caught my eye in “Lace in Translation,” an exhibition at Philadelphia University last autumn. A brief nod to her work from Juxtapoz reignited interest, and it seems she is certainly worth further exploration.
A graduate of SUNY Purchase with an MA in sculpture, Lane seeks to create works of clashing ideas and materials that strike a balance. Her shovels mash the masculine and feminine, masking hard physical labor with delicate hand craft. Lane has received a number of awards and fellowships, most recently the Joseph S. Stauffer Prize from the Canada Council for the Arts in 2007. Learn more about Lane on her website.
