Christine Macy, dean of architecture and planning at Dalhousie University, has written a marvelous piece for Design Observer about the history of dams in America. She pushes beyond just massive federal projects, discussing as well small private damns. The central theme is merger of invention and development and a brief historiography of key thought about dams in National identity. Complementing the essay is an outstanding slide show. Not to be missed.
