Dartmouth University’s Hood Museum of Art celebrates the English mezzotint in The Artful Disposition of Shades. Prior to the advent of photo-mechanical reproduction, mezzotints were the favored method of publicizing paintings in England. Richer in ability to capture light and shadow than engraving and etching, mezzotints became a favored method of providing cheap editions to the general public.

The exhibition runs through March 14, 2010. Learn more here.
