Where form meets function

Going down on March 18, 2010, Swann Auction Galleries’ “Printed and Manuscript Americana” auction features some sweet selections. Included is the archive of Stanley Yale Beach (lot 43) a pioneer in American innovation. The archive contains 3 linear feet of goodies, ranging from letters to photographs (one of which is above). Beach is remembered for financing Gustave Whiteheads attempts at flight, two years before the Wright brothers, and for failed attempts at engine design.

Another gem is the first edition of George A. Dodge’s A Narrative of a Whaling Voyage and its Incidents of 1888. Published in Salem, MA, the work (lot 254) describes a whaling trip out of Nantucket that began in 1831. Similarly exciting is lot 87, a chromolithograph titled “Broadway, N.Y. at Cortland Street. Departure of the 7th Reg’t N.Y.S.M. for the War 1861.” Great color and a stirring scene.

The auction will begin at 1:30 PM and is located at 104 East 25th Street, New York.
