“Jasper Johns: Flag” at PAFA

An American Icon is taking a summer vacation at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

Jasper Johns began working with the 48-star American Flag as subject after waking from a dream, in which he painted one, in 1954. The image took all sorts of configurations over time, as the artist worked in drawing, print, sculpture, and more. His Flag (1960-66), noted as one of the most sensually painted of the series, gets a rare public audience on its trip to PAFA.

Now held in a private collection, Flag will show at PAFA from June 26 to September 12, 2010.
