German automaker Audi has acquired Italian sports motorcycle manufacturer Ducati. Although Audi is part of the Volkswagen group, Audi AG itself officially bought Ducati – making it the third Italian company under Audi after Lamborghini and Italdesign. Audi notes Ducati’s competence in engine technology and lightweight construction as assets that offer great potential for Audi and VW. The reported purchase price is $1.1B, just slightly more than Instagram’s price to Facebook. In 2011, Ducati sold around 42,000 motorcycles and generated revenue of some €480 million.
