Selexyz Dominicanen Bookstore by Merkx+Girod Architecten

These are the kind of crazy architectural projects that you only come across every once in a while. Amsterdam based architecture studio Merkx+Girod Architecten has converted a 13th century Dominican church in Maastricht into a new contemporary bookstore and the outcome is simply stunning.

Rather than taking away too much from the original setting, the firm ended up building a modern structure into the existing one, with the result being perfect fusion. Walking down the ailes of the bookstore with the church columns in the background and the extremely high ceilings, is something one does not see very often.

Take a tour of the incredible space in the above gallery.
