We recently had the chance to attend the Vans Downtown Showdown in Amsterdam. The event brought together a group of skateboarding legends, Pros, Ams and local skate enthusiasts to celebrate 20 years of the iconic Vans Half Cab Shoe with photography, art, skateboarding and music.
On Day 1… Twenty years, twenty skaters, twenty photos and one shoe was the premise for the selection of images curated by Lance Dawes. Steve Van Doren presented Steve Caballero with a special birthday cake to mark the anniversary and unveiled the world’s first skate-able Half Cab Shoe. Guests of the event enjoyed a special musical performance by Ray Barbee, Tommy Guerrero and Chuck Treese. Vans Skate Legend John Cardiel played a DJ set while attendees bumped elbows with skate idols like Tony Alva, Tom Penny, Dustin Dollin and many more.

On Day 3… The Westergasfabriek of Amsterdam transformed into an arena for skateboarding’s best International Pros and Ams as a crowd of over 8,000 watched the contest take place on never before seen ramps designed by participating teams Flip Skateboards, Palace, Blueprint and Antiz. Participating brands competed with 4 person teams with two skaters sessioning each obstacle and competing for the 50,000 euro prize.
Vans Legends Steve Caballero, Tony Alva and Ray Barbee were in attendance all day and helped hand out prizes with Tommy Guerrero, including massive rounds of Gouda cheese for all the winners and a custom made Charge bicycle for the First Place Team, Best Pro & Best Am. The first place team overall was Flip. Element came in 2nd place, Antiz took 3rd place and Toy Machine was a solid 4th.
