For an art installation at a new public park project in north Philadelphia the Brooklyn/NY based artist and designer Dave Rittinger came up with the ‘Color Pencil Tree’ concept. While recreating the park a lot of the existing trees had to be taken down. Reusing and repurposing these trees by turning them into the art objects is Rittinger’s idea. The limbs of the trees are morphed into giant pencils reaching towards the sky in various vibrant shades.
Dave himself says about his project: My work is often playful, colorful and incorporates a sort of metaphorical blending of objects and function, so the fact that pencils are made of trees just made perfect sense. I really liked the idea of morphing the raw material into an embodiment of a manufactured product at this exaggerated scale.
