From the ground up

After already having worked with Converse First String on a green colorway, Hawaii retailer Kicks/Hi and the sneaker brand have teamed up again and present the Chuck Taylor Hi in a new black/grey tiger camo colorway.

“As with our previous release, this 2012 version utilizes the same pin-point screen-printed tiger camouflage on the upper, yet this time the camo pattern is in black & grey tones to echo the very rare black sand beaches on Maui & the Big Island of Hawaii. The black sand is the result of eroded volcanic lava rocks – washed and tumbled over and over in the surf until washing ashore. The chances that there are lava rocks close to the right amount of waves and current are quite slim – making a legitimate black sand beach somewhat of a unicorn. I have vivid memories of visiting Punalu’u on the Big Island. It is an awe inspiring sight to see, and the sand itself is so fine. It is a surreal experience. That rich image of the waves washing ashore onto the black sand made this black/grey Tiger Camo pattern resonate so effectively with us. We have always prided ourselves in creating projects that speak beyond just being an arbitrary colorway “just because”.”

Limited to 600 pairs worldwide, the official release of the sneaker takes place on November 10th, 2012, at Kicks Hawaii and other select retailers. The store also produced a limited edition New Era Snapback cap, matching the sneaker.
