HUF recently opened a pop-up shop in the style of a ghetto liquor store at Hall of Fame located on Los Angeles’ famed Fairfax Ave. Featured in the shop is a REMIO VTS installation, a surveillance camera centerpiece, a malt liquor 40oz bottle display, a HUF Plantlife Sock Vending Machine, and an interactive HUF mirror.
We recently had to the opportunity to speak with HUF’s Scott Tepper about the project as well as what can be found at the shop that can’t be found elsewhere. Take a look below for the full interview.
1. How did the idea of a ghetto liquor store come about?
Basically, both Huf (Keith Hufnagel) and I come from East Coast backgrounds, Keith from Manhattan and I from Jersey, just over the GW bridge. Growing up I would cop weed at shady bodegas uptown, mainly in Washington Heights. This past summer at the Agenda Show we debuted our HUF Plantlife Sock Vending Machine and had built out a bodega facade to surround it with the non-perishable goods that you would see in the NYC bodegas that sold trees.
We had so much fun building this out and reminiscing over the crazy stories that resulted from us copping weed at these places, that when the opportunity to do a pop up shop at Hall Of Fame arose we decided to delve deeper into our upbringing and base the vibe on those ghetto liquor stores: graffiti, and the tie that binds the two – surveillance.
2. What’s available at the pop-up shop that isn’t available elsewhere?
Throughout the span of the pop-up actually, we’ve been steadily restocking it with special projects and collaborations exclusive to that shop and our online store. We worked with our friend who writes Remio and who’s style we appreciate. We gave him carte blanche to bomb the wall leading up the stairs using only 4 colors to do so – CMYK or cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, which represents the 4-color process printing. With Remio, we got to collaborate on hats and tees with this concept in mind.
Another exclusive to the shop is our HUF Plantlife Sock vending machine, as well as the HUF Pleasure Pack, which was a hat and tee playing off the ‘Pleasure’ graphic that adorns the interactive mirror upstairs in the store. Recently we collaborated with Golden Bear on their Deluxe Varsity Jacket, which was exclusive to the pop-up and our online store, and we also did a limited edition 2013 calendar with Van Styles, featuring a number of adult film actresses.
