New Balance 3D Prints a Customized Spike Plate

New Balance is the latest footwear manufacturer to join the 3D printing game with a customized spike plate crafted specifically for their elite runners. The plate is created via Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) and uses biomechanical data for an individually designed plate.

Although the technology is currently only available to select athletes, the combination of 3D printing and SLS can eventually be used in all sports where a hyper-customized shoe is necessary for that edge.

Chances are a future of 3D printed shoes for all are a ways off, but we’re curious to see what the technology has in store for us.
