Italian born Giuseppe Lo Schiavo is a fine art photographer who’s work carries strong surrealist themes, using photography to materialise his artistic visions and not for interpreting reality. His levitation series is inspired by the avant-garde movement of the early 1900s, and depicts well known architectural monuments of different eras on secluded rocks levitating above the sea. Taking these well known architectural symbols out of their ordinary contexts illustrates the freedom of imagination to ‘levitate’ and achieve cognitive levels that surpass reality. The seemingly impossible content of the photographs may at first seem unsettling, but their environment postitioned over still water is surprisingly calming.
