Buyer’s Guide: A Selection of 10 Swim Shorts for Upcoming Summer

So before you think we’re getting carried away with yet another weather-related post, forgive us for getting overexcited at the first signs of the sun here in Berlin. We’ve had to endure a six-month-long winter without any sunshine – we recognize it’s obviously not hot enough to be donning swim shorts on the regular just yet. And if you’re a city dweller, I’m not sure if that’s ever appropriate. But it’s a good idea to get a head start and check out what your swim short options are before every other guy gets there first, and a week before you’re off on holiday you’re left with the dregs in sizes XS and XXL. To make sure you’re prepared with an abundance of options, we’ve compiled a list of 10 of our favorites available to buy now. Check them out after the jump.

Orlebar Brown Jack Board Shorts

Sometimes it’s easy to get carried away with swim shorts and forget that you don’t have to be limited to some faux surfer Hawaiian flower print. These black Orlebar Brown board shorts will remind you that you don’t have to go down that route, unless you want to of course. They come in a quick drying fabric with a mesh lining, and Velcro and loop fastener. Buy them direct from Orlebar Brown.

Onia Gingham Trunk

This pair is designed by Manhattan native Carl Cunow for Onia. The azure blue gingham check means you’re sure to feel summery without overplaying it. Made from a quick drying poly-nylon blend, the shorts feature two side pockets and a back pocket with a zip to keep some essentials handy. Just don’t forget to take them out before you hit the water. Get them now from Steven Alan.

Acne Besson Shorts

Acne can always be relied on for providing a contemporary twist on a simple design. The fuchsia pink bold panel breaks up the monochrome stripes to prevent a predictable nautical vibe. At a slightly higher price point of $160, these shorts are an indulgence if you’re looking to still make an impression on the beach – other than your prominent penis lines, that is. Buy now from MR PORTER.

Cuisse de Grenouille Beige and Petrol Blue Board Shorts

These shorts Cuise de Grenouille have a seriously preppy thing going on, and in a good way. Petrol blue and beige color blocking is set off by a white drawstring tie, with two front placket pockets and one back buttoned pocket. Apparently the fabric even has memory technology so it remembers your fit, whatever that means. Get hold of your pair from Menlook.

TOPMAN Blood Red Swimming Shorts

For an item of clothing that probably won’t get more than a couple of weeks wear in a year, it doesn’t seem economical to drop a hundred on some swim shorts. Topman have an excellent range of affordable ones, including this blood red pair which feature a twisted cotton cord. Buy them online here.

Venroy Australia Iranian Tile Trunk

If you’re going to go for a patterned pair, opt for something a little different and possibly more interesting. This pair from Venroy feature an intricate all-over Iranian tile pattern, with a folkstone grey acrylic drawstring with pewter cord ends, and side and Velcro-fastened back pocket. Buy them from Need Supply Co.

83990 Frank Swim Shorts

83990 “desire to convey, through a product, that indescribable sensation perceived while breathing in the air of the summers in St. Tropez.” Whether or not they achieved this I can’t comment on, having neither been to St. Tropez nor worn the shorts. But they do look dope, and should last a fair few holidays judging by the triple stitched seams. You can get your hands on them from Oi Polloi.

Zara Diamond Pattern Swim Shorts

If you fancy a ’70s throwback style, these sports shorts style should be the pair for you. With an all-over black and grey diamond pattern, the design stays classy and at just over €25, we give our props to Zara for providing strong competition against pairs coming in at over €100. You can order them online from Zara.

Saturdays Notebook Print Red Trunks

NYC surf brand Saturdays has a strong collection of swim shorts, and this pair is no exception. Bright red with a subtle ‘notebook’ print which sort of just looks more like a load of squiggles to me, the style also comes in yellow, blue, and black and you can get hold of a pair from Tres Bien.

Kenzo Khaki Long Swim Shorts

If you’re used to shorts that fall below the knee, and anything that lands above that makes you feel exposed and vulnerable, this pair should be the one for you. If you’re gonna go for a longer length, you may as well go all out with a pair like these Kenzo ones. Featuring a classic Kenzo bold pattern and all-over speckled design in green, navy and orange. Buy them now from SSENSE.
