This austere, tower-like structure is a mountain cabin in Laterns, Vorarlberg, Austria. Besides its starkly geometric construction which stands out against the natural landscape, what makes this “cabin” more interesting is how it treats the landscape as works of art: Thick matte oak slabs frame each window on the inside to make the surroundings look like paintings to the onlooker. The staircase-led midsection entryway is also completely open to allow a panoramic view of the outside upon entering. In this way, the cabin engages itself and its occupants with the landscape, making it conceptually and visually compatible with nature despite its extremely modernist design.
