The tectonic shift in fashion history continues as Nicolas Ghesquière succeeds Marc Jacobs as Louis Vuitton‘s new creative director. With Raf Simons at Dior, Hedi Slimane at Saint Laurent and Alexander Wang at Balenciaga, this news signals another bang in the industry that will hit a refresh on the current market. Ghesquière is known to have brought a more avant-garde aesthetic to his former brand, Balenciaga, where he fused his love of Star Wars and geometric construction with audacious womenswear.
Ghesquière may face some challenges at Louis Vuitton, a brand 25 to 30 times larger in revenue and with more business chiefs than Balenciaga, especially after having left Balenciaga because of creative differences with management. It will also be interesting to see how commercial Ghesquière can be at Vuitton, and whether or not he will continue Jacobs’ string of artistic collaborations.
