On the eve of the highly anticipated Isabel Marant for H&M collection launch, we bring you an interview with Isabel Marant in which she discusses style, English vs. French men’s fashion and how to pull off leather trousers. GQ managed to sit down with the French designer during the launch party for the collection in Paris – here’s what she had to say.

What makes a man stylish?
Wearing you own clothes. I don’t like guys that are too fashionable. I like stylish guys but guys that aren’t overly…”fashioned”! I’ve done a few pieces for men before but never a total look – that was quite tough for me. How to have the right balance. I couldn’t do a plain white jean at H&M because they already have those at H&M, so I had to make it a little different.

We see some leather trousers in your collection. How would you style those up?
Leather trousers – they aren’t easy! I’d wear it with a white linen T-shirt, keep it simple. Perhaps a chunky knit in the winter or with a nice tailored jacket.

What can English guys learn from French guys about style?
Ah, ça! That’s a tough one. I think English women always dress with one look from head to toe, but I don’t get that feeling from English guys – they’re almost the reverse. In many ways I think English guys are more stylish than French guys for that. French guys could learn from English guys – you have more fantasie. French guys are super conservative – always a pair of jeans and a T-shirt and that’s it. The English guys go more into fashion than French men.
