In “Hatch,” he depicts the birth of the car by simulating a car breaking out of its shell. Latex molds are created from each model car and are then filled with a thin layer of gypsum to create a replica shell. The shell is then dropped onto the car, creating the illusion that the car is emerging from it when it smashes open. The artist explains that “there is a unique pleasure about artificially building a moment…freezing a moment in time is stupefying.”
Swiss artist Fabian Oefner is known for capturing moments frozen in time and with his latest work he has created two different series based around classic sports cars. Working with scale models, the first series “Disintegrating” features images of exploding cars that are created by taking thousands of separate photos of individual pieces hanging in mid-air. The pictures are then joined together in post-production to convey the idea of the car falling apart.
