The much-anticipated collaboration collection between Raf Simons and American artist Sterling Ruby made its debut yesterday in Paris. Fall Winter 2014 saw the old friends contribute equal weight, this was not collaboration as we’ve come to know it, a couple of names thrown together on a set of t-shirts. This project had the hallmarks of both men intertwined throughout. The shapes, cuts, silhouettes, the intention to challenge established ideas of “menswear,” definite Simons trademarks, all present and familiar. Ruby’s contribution saw more obvious ‘art’ stamps in splattered paint prints and collage across outerwear, but beyond that the California-based artist brought a sense of movement and energy to the clothing, something raw, DIY, almost anti-fashion in places. Importantly though, there was never the feeling that the two men were pulling in different directions, excuse our use of the word harmonious but that was exactly what this collection achieved, harmony.
