Michael Bastian was inspired by a trip to Japan for his Fall/Winter 2014 collection presented at New York Fashion Week. The lineup ranged from casual to formal, with Bastian’s signature staples paired with kimono embroidery and ethnic jewelry (produced in collaboration with George Frost). Oversized necklaces, bracelets and bag chains made of vintage Japanese coins and horse hair added an element of surprise. Other unexpected accessories included North Face hiking boots and Puma trainers that meshed well with the heavily layered looks that prepare us for next year’s cold season. The strongest looks of the collection were those with silk brocade dinner jackets that fit well and look rich.
