’12 Years A Slave’ and ‘Gravity’ Win Big at the 2014 Oscars

The 2014 Academy Awards last night brought a few surprises, with 12 Years a Slave and Gravity taking out the night’s top honors, while Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle went home empty-handed. Steve McQueen’s pre-Civil War epic won the year’s Best Picture, while newcomer Lupita Nyong’o won Best Supporting Actress for the film. Both Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto won for Dallas Buyers Club, in the Lead Actor and Supporting Actor roles respectively. The night’s big winner, however, was Gravity, which although it missed out on Best Picture and Lead Actress for Sandra Bullock, swept up seven awards including Directing, Cinematography, Editing, Sound Design and Mixing, Music, and Visual Effects. Overshadowing the awards was a sadly heavy “In Memorium” section which included James Gandolfini, Roger Ebert, Paul Walker and Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
