Marc Newson adds eyewear to his design resume with this line of frames for Safilo. Launching in Milan this April, the Australian-born industrial designer produces five pairs of glasses and two pairs of sunglasses based on classic archive Safilo styles pulled from their eighty years worth of manufacturing. Over-sized ’60s (Deidre Barlow vibe) styles in lightweight, hypoallergenic plastic sit beside more understated metallic models, all packaged in a calf leather Valextra case stamped “Valextra for Safilo Marc Newson.” Newson comments “In many ways it’s a really interesting object, a pair of glasses, because it straddles the borderline between fashion and industrial design…they’re like a tool. I’m obsessed with really good quality tools”
