Applying the gabled form to the interior as well as exterior, ALTS Studio present Hazukashi, a unique and off-beat “house within a house” structure located in a Kyoto suburb. Architects Sumiou Mizumoto and Yoshitaka Kuga repeat the familiar slanted roof shape across the home in various doorways, windows, nooks and walls, serious swathes of various natural woods played against the rather lighthearted nature of the design. Frivolous this is not – the fairytale interior does indeed carry a practical function, these carefully placed openings designed to allow the maximum amount of light to flood into the narrow space. Take a tour in the gallery.
