Strachan Group Architects and Rachael Rush built these “Boatsheds” in Auckland, New Zealand, a family residence walking distance from the illustrious Takapuna Beach. Ceiling-high windows swing open like revolving doors that fully embrace the outside, integrating the mini pool and patio with the private living spaces. The exterior is characterized by thick black shades lining the facades whose linear movement continues inside with slabs of timber that exist as flooring, rails, exposed ceiling frames, and even bookshelves spanning multiple floors. The intimidatingly modern feel of the house is offset by the classic gabled roof structure that provide an overall organic and familiar residential mood.
