Nike have long been a formidable presence in football at a professional level but now the company is launching a new app to consolidate its role in the amateur game as well. The new Nike Football app acts as a social network of sorts where users can organize matches and mini leagues for their teams, share banter over results and access exclusive Nike product. Somewhat controversially, however, the new app will also be the only way for people to access the Nike Academy – the brand’s dedicated football training school designed to help talented young players break into the sport’s professional tier. While that’s certainly a laudable cause, the fact that this resource is now only available to smartphone owners raises some questions about how open to talent from all backgrounds the project really is. Still, for those with the requisite technology, the app is available for download for both iOS and Android from July 10. Register now over at Risk Everything.
