Underground photographer-filmmaker Richard Kern takes us back to 1995 with his latest exhibition titled “New York Girls Revisited” at Marlborough Broome Street. The show marks the 20th anniversary of his sexually transgressive book that showcases Kern’s depiction of the New York City tough girl, taken from the 1980s through until the ’90s.
With a strong reflection on the cultural shift over the past two decades, Kern’s work echoes eroticism and fetishism in the East Village. In a series of both color and black-and-white images accompanied by a video, Kern pushes the viewer into contextualizing how we might consider provocative imagery in art and popular culture today.
“New York Girls Revisited” opened its doors on November 19 and will run through until December 23, 2015.
