Tune in and turn up

In this week’s edition of Friday Feuds there’s swiftly delivered shade and a radio meets rap beef. Plus, a television conglomerate takes aim at a one-time child star laboring under some personal illusions, and one of Atlanta’s most notorious names has an unfortunate misunderstanding…

Drake vs. Hot 97

New York City hip-hop fans have most likely heard the enthused ramblings of Hot 97 radio personality Funkmaster Flex. You know, all those times your favorite hook was about to drop and then suddenly the song fades out so Flex can tell you about an upcoming party or share his opinion on a current event…

Yesterday during the New York leg of his Summer Sixteen tour notoriously petty rapper Drake expressed his contempt for Flex, who famously appeared to side with Meek Mill during last year’s battle of the diss tracks. However, instead of keeping things directed at the source of his ire, Drizzy came for the entire radio station…

His comment soon sparked reactions from some of Hot 97’s best-known personalities…

Justin Bieber vs. Taylor Swift

Even though the fallout from Kanye West’s hotly debated single, “Famous,” has largely died down, one blonde pop star isn’t letting things go completely silent quite yet. This week Justin Bieber took the time to seemingly throw a little shade in the direction of Taylor Swift. Swift came under fire when Kim Kardashian-West took to Snapchat to show proof that the singer had known about West’s risqué “Famous” rhymes…

Bieber posted a screenshot of him on a FaceTime call with West, captioning the innocent photo with, “Taylor Swift What Up.” The move left many debating whether the Biebs was just making light of a dramatic situation or was officially picking sides in the ongoing dispute…

Young Thug vs. Police

Atlanta rapper Young Thug narrowly avoided what could have become a messy and tragic situation at a Pittsburgh concert venue. Thugger came through to perform at the city’s yearly Summer Jam concert and took his leave of the arena shortly after his set. However, in true messy fashion, someone from the venue’s security crew promptly called the police with concerns that someone from Thug’s crew was brandishing a firearm…

The situation ended with a full SWAT team descending on Thug’s van only to discover that the rapper’s personal security was indeed armed, but only with registered weapons. Though no arrests were made and no one was injured the incident led to renewed discussion about the role of law enforcement. Tensions have been notably high following the deaths of Alton Sterling, Philando Castile and more recently Koryn Gaines, who was killed in her home in the presence of her five-year-old son who also suffered bullet wounds.

Bow Wow vs. BET

Last week Twitter partook in an epic roast of child rapper turned television personality, Bow Wow, after he stated that he didn’t consider himself black because one side of his family was biracial. The comment came on the heels of Bow Wow stating he would not be voting in the upcoming election…

Shortly after the Twitter drag, BET even got in on the action when BET Jams ran a series of old Bow Wow music videos accompanied by the hashtag #WeLostMoss…bloop.
