The first round of press surrounding upcoming horror film Don’t Breathe has almost been too good to believe. Reviews for the movie have made claims like its “Hitchcock on crack” or that it's “the best American horror film in 20 years.” But hype be damned, all the proof you need is in the film’s just-released red band trailer. Rest assured, it looks like the stuff of literal nightmares.

Don’t Breathe concerns a group of teenage delinquents in Detroit who pick an easy target for a robbery: a blind man with a safe in his basement. But being a horror film, things don’t go according to plan, and it seems that this blind man is not as helpless as he seems. The trailer depicts all manner of violence and terror, but what really sticks in your gut is one character’s whispered moan of “so fucked up” that is repeated over and over.

The film is the second effort from director Fede Alvarez, who helmed the recent remake of horror classic The Evil Dead. In reaction to that film, he has stated that he wanted Don’t Breathe to work without any gore or supernatural elements. Which makes whatever ghastly shit went down in that trailer all the more terrifying. It may still be summer, but it looks like Halloween has just come a little earlier than expected.

Don’t Breathe hits theaters on August 26.
