Musicals are a dicey genre to throw down in nowadays, particularly musicals told in the classic Hollywood style without a revisionist rap or ABBA-themed update. But if you’re really set on making an old-school musical, a good place to start would be casting Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling as your romantic leads. Who wouldn’t pay 15 bucks to see them share a smooch? At least that must have been Whiplash director Damien Chazelle’s thinking when casting his upcoming film La La Land, and if the new trailer is any indication, he did a good job.
La La Land tells the story of Mia and Sebastian, an aspiring actress and jazz musician respectively, who attempt to balance both a torrid love affair and their dreams of stardom in the City of Angels. And though the film utilizes a score that comes right out of Hollywood’s Golden Age, the whole thing is set in the present day.
Where the first trailer was scored by the husky baritone of Gosling, the new trailer hones in on Stone as she lightly works her way through a melancholy ballad titled “Audition.” John Legend and J.K. Simmons (fresh from his Oscar win for Whiplash) round out the cast, and you can be sure to see some of these names pop up at this year’s Academy Awards.
La La Land is out in theaters on December 2.
