The Universal Monsters franchise is finally ready to get going with its first big release — a reboot of The Mummy starring Tom Cruise as the hero.
Directed by Alex Kurtzman, the film is set in the present day and stars Cruise as Tyler Colt, an ex-Navy SEAL who takes on an ancient and seemingly very pissed-off princess (played by Star Trek Beyond‘s Sofia Boutella). Russell Crowe also stars alongside Boutella and Cruise. His character is rumored to be Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, which could open up the possibility of Universal Monsters releasing a solo movie for Crowe's character further down the line.
The Universal Monsters franchise has been the subject of much speculation in recent years, but has yet to follow through on all of its promise. It was launched in 2014 as a "shared universe of action-adventure/horror films that includes rebooted versions of old movies," but, as yet, not a single movie has made it to theaters.
By rebooting its monster back-catalog, Universal will be raising the likes of Dracula, Frankenstein and The Invisible Man from the dead, with actors like Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem and Angelina Jolie all rumored to feature in the films.

In other good news, Netflix has finally rolled out an offline viewing mode.
