Björk has taken to social media to share a stinging letter criticizing the unwavering sexism in the music industry and the media. “Men are allowed to go from subject to subject, do sci-fi, period pieces, be slapstick and humorous, be music nerds getting lost in sculpting soundscapes but not women. If we don’t cut our chest open and bleed about the men and children in our lives we are cheating our audience,” she wrote.
The letter was written in response to a recent DJ gig she completed in Texas, where she was lambasted by the media for “hiding behind desks” and not performing, a critique that none of her male counterparts were given during the event. She went on to point out that women are often relegated to creating work explicitly around men, leading to the amazing epithet “eat your Bechdel test heart out.”
