One of the most influential and celebrated figures of twentieth century LGBTQ culture is recognized in Tom of Finland by award-winning filmmaker Dome Karukoski.
The picture delves into the life of Touko Laaksonen, best recognized by his pseudonym Tom of Finland, who was a Finnish artist known for his highly masculinized homoerotic fetish art, as well as his influence on gay culture.
As a decorated officer, Laaksonen returned home after a life-changing experience serving his country in World War II. But life in Finland during peacetime proved equally distressing, as he discovered post-war Helsinki was rampant with homophobic persecution, and gay men around him were being pressured to marry women and have children.
Finding refuge in his liberating art of homoerotic drawings of muscular men, it was only when an American publisher saw them and invited Tuoko over to the West Coast that his life really took a turn.
Check out the first official trailer above as Tom of Finland will open theatrically in NYC on Friday, October 13 and in Los Angeles/San Francisco on Friday, October 20, 2017, with a national release to follow soon after.
