Estate LA: Brett Wiley Interview

Locally Made Caps
By Nick Schonberger, posted on 14 August 2008
That's dope. Do you have a personal favorite cap you've produced?

Brett: The collaboration we did with snowboard magazine has to be one of my favorites, that and all the seersucker joints for summer. Plus the mineki neko tear away. That was our first attempt at a tear away

Just to quickly clarify, the heritage collection... it’s based on your popular designs but with a vintage silhouette and aesthetic?

Brett: The heritage collection uses broadcloth and a relaxed crown using a goat hair backing. It’s a throwback baseball cap.

No doubt. My type of hat.

Brett: My type as well. The heritage collection releases next spring. However, the first of its kind is a collaboration with Freeman Transport (a company based out of montana making handmade fixed gears). The Freeman is in production now.

That's the one on the homepage?

Brett: Yeah.

Real nice.

Brett:Freeman’s bikes use s&s couplings. They come with Billy Kirk bags and you can separate them to take them on the plane with you. Ill shit. At the store we are also stocking the hats and products for all the companies we work with. We will have a few Freeman’s coming in as well as Rogue, Diamond, Fitted Hawaii,Triumvir etc. No targets though, or red bulls.

So, it becomes an Estate and Friends type vibe, minus the big corporate buddies.

Brett: Basically our Associates are all our friends. We try to keep it on a friendship level less of a business environment. However biz is biz and we get shit handled none the less.
