When I first started noticing Gourmet, I had a simple thought. “Wow, these guys have some balls!” After all, they’d produced a shoe that looked like a Jordan. And, not just any Jordan, an XI the holy grail (for me) of the numbered set. It’s a shoe complete with so many memories, so much style, and one that just always slipped away.
However, further inspection revealed something a bit special. They’d reinterpreted the shoe cleanly. Canvas on a vulcanized rubber sole. Growing older the opportunity to wear Jordan’s casual hadn’t quite evaporated, but just didn’t seem right. With Gourmet the style coveted in youth were retained, while the aesthetic became (dare I say) adult. In that, the Gourmet line has real appeal. A casual look with nods to classic footwear. More than anything else, an understanding of materials and reverence for pieces that brought my attention to footwear in the first place continues to bring me back to the brand.
I’d wanted to interview Jon Buscemi for some time. For whatever reason, we never connected when it first struck me. Then, Gourmet produced a shoe based on a duck boot. My affair with their vision and their shoes rekindled, we finally made it happen.
Jon, Greg and I discussed how they’ve grown, some of their challenges, and the lessons learned from moving from New York to Los Angeles.
