HS: Sometimes I think people loose sight of the city... outside of the debauchery of sailors leave... a lot of folks see the islands just for the beach.
Jun: Honolulu is crazy, you’re pretty much 15 minutes from beautiful beaches and warm weather.
HS: The college football seems to be picking up.
Jun: Hell yeah, it’s huge.
HS: Is that the big sport? Green washing the streets on Saturday?
Jun: Not having a professional team in Hawaii, college football is it. I think it has to do with everyone being proud of being from Hawaii and with the big Hawaii logo on Helmets and Jerseys.
HS: It seems the one state with near universal pride.
Jun: Yeah, we’re a proud bunch, and we love it here.
HS: And, there is embrace of converging cultures?
Jun: Yeah, there is a lot. I would have to say though, it’s more Asia and United States. For Filipinos , Japanese , Okinawans , Tongans , Samoans and mainlanders it’s a perfect mix. Seems like a lot of us in Hawaii have a mix of cultures in us.
HS: Let's talk about mix as it relates to stocking the Aloha Army store. What's in there, and what are some of the essential whys?
Jun: Well, for headliners, there’s RVCA, who is new in the surfing movement. Those guys are family, as we grew up with the owners since little kids, believe it or not.
We have Insight women's, which is an incredible mix of high fashion and surf. Our own Aloha Army line which will be debuting sometime next year. Raen sunglasses, who everyone will soon know about. Then were working on incorporating some of the big street lines into surf, like a street/ surf line would be similar to the Crooks Billabong shorts feel that came out a few months ago.
HS: How will the Aloha line distinguish from the in4mation look?
Jun: It will be way more surfy, but with our feel to it. What we wanted to make is a brand that is accessible to everyone, tied into the Hawaii vibe as well
HS: For the layman, what's an example of how that might work?
Jun: Simplest terms, we’re going to do Hawaii surf stuff with the in4mation flare to it.
HS: To finish up, what are some things to look forward to from the camp in the next few months? Things that kids should be asking about for the holidays?
Jun: As for projects we dropped a in4mation x Gravis x Diamond travel bag late November. The big rollers for people that travel and want to have something different. The first day it’s gonna be sold at the store only, then after that we are making an email that you can pre-order the bag. So whatever is left , it goes from there on a first come first served basis. Got the Vans shoe and the purple G-Shock as well, all of these will have the same way of selling it.
HS: The Vans is the denim Half Cab?
Jun: Yes, can’t wait to get a pair. I might have to wait in line.
HS: Good feeling when your own product warrants that.
Jun: For real though. As we have always done the customers first deal, no matter what. A week after the staff can get it then whatever is left. We get last picks.
HS: A good policy.
Jun: Yeah, it’s just one of those things, you go to a store and all the guys working are wearing the shoe, and they are saying, “Oh, we only got 8 pairs to sell total.
HS: Right, all too often.
Jun: It’s like rubbing it in peoples faces.
