Le Messie
Everything Is False
HS: In the late 19-th Century a British General amassed an enormous collection of Moko heads. He then produced the first book in the Western World on the subject, and subsequently the heads toured the world causing a huge sensation all over. Would you be weirded out or honored if your head became part of an exhibition?
Messie: You must be talking about Horatio Gordon Robley. His act was deeply frowned upon by many especially by the Maori community. However I think that would be such an honour to have your remains become a part of educational art history! HS: Who are the people you'd absolutely love to work with, regardless of product outcome? Messie: Tomas Maier of the Bottega Veneta fashion house. I know the irony with Better Off Dead, but BV is the only fashion house I hold in very high acclaim, the way they carry themselves to the choices in shape and color but most importantly their craftsmanship. We support BV mainly for their classic accessories and original BV weave which have been manipulated all over. Their mens cuts are exceptionally well thought through and I often mix BV into my personal wears. HS: What are your favorite designs from FALSE to date? Messie: Wow, I don’t really know. I’ve done so many. If I had to choose it would of course be my latest works! HS: On a visit to Singapore in 2002, I was really impressed by the Institute of Contemporary Art (and the night Zoo). Who are some of the local artists you’re feeling at the moment? Is there a person or collective you think is on the cusp of a big international break? Messie: Yes, we recommend the zoo and night safari to all our visiting guests, the amount of times we’ve been there is ridiculous but I still love it every single time. To be honest we’re not very active in the local movements, we run a small camp at FALSE, creating and producing take most of our time if not all of it. In the future as we grow we look forward to getting to be apart of the local talent pool and give back by helping promising young skills take center stage. HS: The global status of FALSE... are you ever surprised? Messie: Always… and always ever grateful! HS: What are some future projects you’d like to get to? Obviously music is on the way, lots more of “EVERYTHING IS FALSE,” seems as if you can almost do anything? Messie: We have an array of projects coming up from my previously mentioned FALSEYES sunglass division to our Stashers by FALSE plush toy department, to more much talked about Better Off Dead releases, additions to the Everything Is FALSE line, FALSE collaborative projects with high profile individuals around the globe and also our FALSE Magazine Issue 2 which sees itself this time in the form of a unique graphic novel. There’s this little thing called “Japanese Cartoon” if you don’t already know a simple google would suffice. I also have my personal EP entitled Le Messie Presents “My Minds A Scary Place” being released at the later part of this year. Yes and I have to send my brain for a full overhaul so I can actually tend to each one of those things above! |
