G-Star by Marc Newson

Born in Sydney, Australia, in 1963, Marc Newson has proven a dab hand at conquering any design challenge. Through his furniture, particularly the Lockhead Loungue (1986), Newson began to build a name. He moved to Tokyo (working for Teruo Kurosaki), where he continued to work on developing prototype furniture and design resturaunt interiors. In the mid-1990s, Newson began experimenting with CAD software, which brought his career to a new level. He began to take on commercial projects, like designing mass-produced products for Alessi and Magis. These projects made him a superstar in the design world, leading to work on cars with Ford and aeroplane interiors for Quantas.

These examples are just a few from A staggering range of material that Newson has created. From a fashion end, he began working with G-Star in 2003 and unveiled a series of footwear with Nike in 2004

For Spring/Summer 2010 Newson provides a modern interpretation of four jackets and two t-shirts.The garments are based on an indigo blue color scheme, and in place of the usually utilitarian fabrics associated with the silhouettes, Newson charges the pieces with luxurious leathers and silks. In short, he’s transformed them much the same way he’s transformed airline interiors, making them into articles of sumptuous style.

We shared some emails with Mr. Newson to discuss his work with G-Star and his approach to design.
