On June 12th, Street Dreams will hit major theaters nationwide, marking the first time in history that a dramatic film about skateboarding made completely by skateboarders will come out of the Hollywood machine. It’s a huge gamble, but it’s also a calculated risk and the man behind it, Rob Dyrdek, a skateboarder turned marketing and entertainment force, is without argument the best person to attempt what has never been done before: make a skate movie that skateboarders actually like.
Both Thrashin’ and Gleaming the Cube are unilaterally despised for their cornball portrayal of skaters, even despite the tinge of nostalgia, so the real trick Dyrdek had to pull off was producing a film about skateboarding in Hollywood without letting it be ruined by Hollywood. Obviously no small task, Dyrdek did what felt right, he assembled a team consisting solely of friends and professionals from inside of the skateboarding industry. Their unified goal was to try to make Street Dreams the first legitimate telling of a story from a skateboarder’s perspective that would both capture the hearts and minds of skaters but also impress upon people outside, or even in conflict with skateboarding, what the skate lifestyle is all about. HighSnobiety linked up with Rob, writer Nino Scalia, director Chris Zamoscianyk, executive producers Jason Bergh and Sal Masekela from Berkela Motion Pictures, and stars Paul Rodriguez and Terry Kennedy to talk about what it took to get Street Dreams made and what they hope it will accomplish.
