PUMA’s relationship with track star Tommie Smith dates back to the 1960’s. He was a sponsored PUMA athlete & took home the gold medal in the 200M in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics with the world record time of 19.83 seconds. After setting 7 individual world records in track & field, Tommie played professional football for the Cincinnati Bengals for one season and was elected into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame in 1978. A tribute to this brave athlete and his favorite pair of PUMA sneakers, the Clyde in navy suede, the Tommie Smith Clyde collection features 2 exclusive Clyde offerings.
Blue Suede Clydes:
These are the shoes that Tommie wore on the podium in the 1968 Olympic games. They have been lined with a metallic gold leather lining, a reference to his gold medal win. Other details include an embossed gold medal FOT, Mexico City reference on the sockliner & lateral and the tongue labels display his record breaking time of 19.83 s in the 200M race.
Gold Clydes:
An upper made out of metallic gold leather, with an embossed 1968 Mexico City Olympic gold medal all over pattern. Other details include an embossed gold medal FOT, Mexico City reference on the sockliner & lateral and the tongue labels display his record breaking time of 19.83 seconds in the 200M race.
Oki-Ni will be one of the few select retailers to carry the collection as of August 23rd, 2008.
Have a look at some more detailed images of both Clyde’s after the jump.

These r the “sickest” LTD EDT shoes ever by a sports clothing brand, and are one of the most comfortable shoes that anyone could possibly wear. I was very lucky to get a pair of 10’s around 2 weeks after the Beijing Games of ‘08(they only were distributed in ‘full-sizes’ 9-13[generally 1 of each size per store; or 2 sizes of each of the more popular sizes eg; 10 & 11 in some of the most popular/centraly-located stores], and just for a limited time 4 the purpose for Beijing’s Olympics), and still they had to be sent interstate from another city. Not only r they one of the very few pairs of casual shoes that I wear(for only special occasions) from many casuals in my collection, but look “sicker” than even my 2 pairs of Nike AirForce1’s(which are brown that I generally wear) that are just a little fraction more comfy. These Mexico City shoes r based on the “Clyde” design or ‘re-released Clyde’ “Suede”(a typical Clyde in suede leather). If anyone is ever thinking of getting a pair of real comfortable casuals, and are a very ‘wearable’ colour, you can’t do any worse or much better than a pair of Puma Clydes!! =)
Oh yeh, just forgot guys…. I did get the blue suede pair(the 2nd pic of shoes that u see). The gold fell quite plastic-y vinyl/nylon. They are not suede or leather at all! I still recommend anyone to get a pair of Puma Clydes, and even got a pair of the Puma Black ‘Suede’ Tommie Smith ones in 10’s(aka; with the ‘black-power’ fists all over them), which came out soon after.
