For three decades Mary Cooper has documented graffiti. Often, she is the able accomplice and collaborator to Henry Chalfant. Together, they released Subway Art in1988, a book that stands as the bible of graffiti literature, and also holds the pages that introduced street art to youth the world over. Cooper’s most recent work is Tag Town. With photographs dating back to the late ’60s, Cooper begins to unveil theparticulars of developing a tag. Integral to a writers identity, addressing a single aspect of graffiti culture is a wonderfully nuanced way of pushing her archives to fullpotential. The book is out now from Dokument.
