It Ain’t Fair Exhibition by OHWOW | An Interview with Julia Chiang

Yesterday we released a short interview with José Parla and gave you an early look at his work for the upcoming “It Ain’t Fair” exhibition, which takes place this week during Art Basel Miami. We continue to bring you some background information in anticipation of the OHWOW event series this week. Here now an interview with artist Julia Chiang.

Highsnobiety: Please introduce yourself to our readers.

Julia Chang: I’ve been living and working in Brooklyn for over 10 years focusing mainly on sculpture, installation, and works on paper. I was born in Atlantic City, NJ and like to believe I have a bit of clairvoyance and luck in my bones.

HS: What are you most excited about in this year’s Art Basel Miami? Which shows/events/exhibitions do you not want to miss?

JC: There are so many things to see I’m kind of overwhelmed but I am excited to see the David Lynch show at O.H.W.O.W. and of course psyched to see all the work together in It Aint’ Fair. I also can’t wait to see the murals Jasmine Levett at Deitch Projects has been organizing and I hope to see Santigold’s performance. I want to see the screening of Tamra Davis’ new film “Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child” and check out Creative Time’s events.

Read the full Interview with Julia Chiang after the jump.

HS: How has Art Basel Miami changed over the years and what has it brought to the US art market?

JC: I haven’t gone every year but it feels bigger every year. It seems with each year there are more venues getting involved and so many great people coming together to create projects. I’m not sure how that affects the market, but hopefully it just creates more room for everyone.

HS: Your works are included in the “It Ain’t Fair” Exhibition by OHWOW. Please give us some background on the works that are on display.

JC: My work in It Ain’t Fair is part of ongoing projects using Ring Pop candy. I used Ring Pops for the first time in 2005 and since then have continued to do wall pieces where the candy is left to melt over time. As the candy deteriorates it leaves its mark on what ever surface it touches. I’ll create three separate pieces for this show: “Sincerely Yours”, “Hugs + Kisses”, and “Love Always”.

HS: What can be expect to see from you in the near future? Tell us what is on the horizon.

JC: Hopefully I’ll be busy creating a lot of new work! Right now I am working on two new sculptural editions and some text pieces on paper. And I am hoping to finish a larger sculpture of continuous chain links made of porcelain before the end of the year. A crew of awesome women including Simone Shubuck, Anna Sheffield, Cheryl Dunn, Carol Lee, Cindy Greene, Robyn Forest and more are getting together for a craf-ty night for the holidays and I’ll be hosting in my studio in the new year. We’re going to try to keep them going, so I’m pretty psyched for those.

I’m super excited to be in an exhibition with so many great artists and friends. It’s really nice to be part of something with so much support. I have so much love for friends that got me involved and for the OHWOW family. I can’t say thanks enough to Topps for donating all the candy- Thank you!

Make sure to check out the exhibition!

  2. Spirituality Movies…

James McAcoy and Emily Blunt play the lead characters. I adore both of these actors and I’ m looking forward to their vocal chemistry. Elton John makes a cameo in the movie– as a gnome! He also provides the soundtrack to the movie….
