The 7 Best Video Games of 2011

2011 saw some pretty good to great releases throughout the year. The status quo remains with anything Call of Duty ruling over all, and when we say all, we mean pretty much all of entertainment. Here’s an interesting fact pertaining to that notion: the latest release from the gaming franchise was Modern Warfare 3, which took 16 days to break 1 billion dollars in sales. In doing so, it surpassed Avatar, which grossed that amount in 17 days. That’s power right there. Recently, MW3 won the VGA’s ‘Best Shooter’ award beating out stiff competition with Battlefield 3, Rage and Gears of War 3. That is a pretty debatable, though. MW3 is loaded with flaws be it a horrible respawn system, or the continued appearance of death streaks, which in essence, rewards bad gameplay. When you really think about it, Battlefield and Gears are probably more sound and enjoyable, but there’s something about Call of Duty that keeps you coming back. Now that the game has been out for over a month now, it’s not uncommon to hear about people jumping ship from MW3, but the thing is, they’re not going back to other popular franchises — they’re going back to the previous CoD release, Black Ops.

The thing is, there are great games outside of the First Person Shooter (FPS) genre like the aforementioned gaming titles. This year saw some fantastic Role-playing Games (RPG), Action Adventures, Sports, and Multi-player releases. RPG gaming studio powerhouse Bethesda released the Game of the Year award winner with their hit The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim; Batman: Arkham City was a strong contender as it was pretty epic; and another familiar face from one of the most popular franchises of all time, Link, had a triumphant year with The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Oops… we almost forgot about fighting games. Mortal Kombat also had another gruesome and explicit release this year, which was pretty awesome. There’s nothing like a good Fatality in all it’s bone crunching and organ destroying glory.

Anyway, check out some gameplay and trailer clips from some of our favorite releases from this year.

    Where’s uncharted and portal?

svks – in all honesty, i’ve heard nothing but great things about Portal 2. the reason it was omitted is simply because i never got around to playing it. i wasn’t comfortable with putting in something i am entirely unfamiliar with, and for Fail, the same goes with uncharted. it is a game i wanted to try, but have not gotten around to. previous uncharted games were thoroughly entertaining in my opinion, but this came out during a time when i was trying to give full attention to battlefield 3.

is there anything else you guys feel was missed? are there any titles you’re looking forward to for 2012?

  6. StevenL:

Well I spend my entire xmas holiday on BF3 on my kidbrothers computer. It is freaking awesome!

Titles I’m looking forward to in 2012 can be summed up in one title – Diablo 3. Which runs on a mac btw. which is pretty nice, though I’m still planning on buying a monster PC just to play BF3 :)
