After first bringing them back in suede a couple of months ago, Airwalk has released the iconic mid top shoe in two premium leather versions now. The Airwalk Desert Boot LE comes in beige and black colorways with an embossed logo on the side-panel, and they look much better and much more premium than the suede versions that we previously saw. Mita has them in stock now.

Bape and Airwalk team up for Fall/Winter 2011 and present a collaborative version of the iconic Everest Boot. A beige version of the boot will release this season, featuring an embossed Bape head graphic on one side and further embossed details on the other. Not the strongest boot collaboration to come from A Bathing Ape, but fans of the Everest will for sure be into them.

The industry is clearly coming of age. As we trudge boldly into the second decade of the new millennium, many 80s babies are rounding a quarter century or more in business with retailers, athletes and companies alike blowing out the candles and taking the time to celebrate their longevity and evolution as brands. With these landmark quarter centennials has come a wave of nostalgia and an opportunity to look back on the time lines of these icons, their relevance to today’s designs and their implications toward the future of young men’s footwear and apparel.

One of the most recent to join the twenty five year club is Airwalk. During its salad days in the mid nineties, Airwalk was the third “hottest” footwear brand on the market according to the US Footwear Retail Survey topped only by established sporting giants, Nike and Reebok. It’s history since those days, marked poignantly by a 2004 acquisition has been controversial to some, yet its current owners at Collective Licensing International contend the brand is bigger and stronger than ever before. Whatever side of the fence you’re on, Airwalk’s status as one the original pioneers of the actions sports and lifestyle market remains unchanged

In our latest feature, we sit down with Airwalk Director of Product Randy Kleiner to get some official history behind the iconic but sometimes contentious company. Many questions were asked and most were answered.

Japanese brand Mackdaddy collaborates with Airwalk on their iconic ‘One’ low top sneaker. Two versions of the sneaker come as part of the pack, one featuring a print and the other one featuring a bleached denim upper.

A couple of days ago we presented some collaborative sneakers by Bounty Hunter, Airwalk and DC Comics. As part of the same project Japanese brand Masterpiece has also gotten together with Airwalk and DC Comics. They also present Superman and Batman themed sneakers. This time the result is are two high top sneakers, a little more colorful and playful than what we have seen from BxH. Logos of all three brands are placed on the in-sole and the box.

In an interesting collaboration Japanese brand Bounty Hunter teams up with DC Comics and Airwalk on a pack of sneakers. Keeping it overall very clean, the two sneakers come in all black, featuring a mix of suede and leather on the upper. Tonal Bounty Hunter and Batman/Superman branding is placed on the upper. These are certainly not the most innovative silhouette, but if you are a Bounty Hunter and Batman fan, this is just perfect.

Airwalk has collaborated with XLarge Japan on the Jim Tennis low top sneaker. The sneaker comes in two colorways featuring wool felt uppers, perfect for the cold months of the year. Furthermore the sneaker features XLarge branding on the side-panel, the heel and on the inner sole. The two colorways of the sneaker are now available exclusively from Tokishirazu.

The collaboration between Staple Design and Airwalk continues for Spring 2010. The line has been expanded and now also includes womens and kids styles, as well as new silhouettes. We like some of the slimmer high top styles, as well as the boat shoe, The Gallivant, in the collection. Just like before, no style goes for above 50 USD in store at Payless. Most of the new shoes are now available here.

After re-introducing the desert boot last season in Japan, Airwalk has released two new colorways for Spring/Summer 2010. The mid top boot comes in dark green and in grey, both featuring a black outer sole.

To celebrate the release on DVD of the latest Star Trak saga, they once again asked STPL and Airwalk to work on a sneaker for the occasion.

“Now, we will launch a 3 set collection for the DVD release. Each shoe features three Star Trek delta shield logos (back, front and on the tongue). The Terrain’s are available in the three Star Trek uniform colors of “Engineering” Red, “Command” Gold and “Science” Blue. These will be available not only at Reed Space but also select Payless stores as well as Payless.com.”

Just like we are used from the STPL x Airwalk collection, the footwear will be priced at below 50 USD.

We get a first more detailed look at several styles from the STPL x Airwalk Fall/Winter 2009 Collection, designed by Jeff Staple and his Staple Design team. The line, which will be exclusive to Payless (other than The Reed Space), has certainly brought up many questions. From a pure aesthetic and design perspective this is certainly good news for both Airwalk and Payless.

The Fall/Winter 2009 Collection consists of low top and high top sneakers, as well as slip-ons. Premium materials have been used on the uppers, including exotic leathers, plaid and more. We like the more simple sneakers in the collection, which come in nice color combos for good price points. All footwear will go for under 50 USD.

Airwalk is celebrating the 20th anniversary of their 540 model. The classic skate sneaker comes back this season in two new colorways, using all sorts of premium materials on the upper. On top of the re-release of the 540, they are also coming out for Fall 2009 with new colorways of their Velocity, Revert and Fahrenheit models. For oldschool Airwalk lovers they bring back the Vic Velcro and the Canvas Hi Tops. Look out for the new Airwalk Fall 2009 Footwear Collection later this summer.

After reveiling the first Staple x Airwalk sneaker last week, we can give you today a first look at an interesting upcoming collaboration. Staple worked together with Airwalk on a Star Trek sneaker. The sneaker comes in a silver metallic colorway, inspired by the Enterprise. The Star Trek logo appears in the form of a lace lock and also embroidered on the heel. Via Jeff Staple.

The Staple x Star Trek x Airwalk Terrain will released this weekend, May 8th, at The Reed Space, limited to 140 pairs.

News about Staple working on a new Airwalk collection were received with mixed feelings, especially because of the association with Payless stores. Today we can give you a first full look at one of the sneakers that resulted out of the collaboration. The mid top sneaker comes in brown leather and aside from the laces keeps its subtle looks. Nothing to complain about, a clean and simple sneaker that will be retailing for no more than 50 USD when it comes out in August 2009. After years of not producing anymore the iconic Desert Boot by Airwalk, they have now come back into production, after the personal request by Beastie Boys memeber Adam Yauch. The shoe is back in production, but only in very limited quantities. There will be 300 pairs of the shoe and it will NOT hit retail. These 300 pairs are given out to people.

To celebrate the occasion, Airwalk is hosting the “Break The Mold” event on January 27th at the Hotel On Rivington. Details of the event follow after the jump.

Rare talent isn’t the only thing that was celebrated at this year’s SXSW Festival; rare sneakers are too.  A few lucky musicians and aficionados walked away with one of a select few Airwalk heritage styles that were reintroduced in Austin this year, including the eponymous Airwalk Vic Velcro. 
Originally introduced in 1987, Vic took on a life of his own, making an indelible mark in the industry as one of the most iconic skate styles of all time.  Vic Velcro’s “lace saver” flap was designed to help skaters from blowing out laces during aggressive sessions on in the pipe or on pavement.  The sleek high top is as innovative today, as it was back in the day, and even enjoys a viral fan base of skate and sneaker enthusiasts alike.
After two decades, the Vic Velcro embarked on a special domestic reunion tour as the marquee product at a special Airwalk presentation at the Spin/MySpace San Jacinto Saloon at the South by South West Music Festival in Austin, Texas from March 13-16th 2008.  As one of the select range of classic Airwalk styles available for men and women, the Vic Velcro is one of the first re-releases for the Airwalk brand and will not being sold to the general public.  The Vic Velcro took its place as one of the most coveted collectables items for attending performers, musicians, tastemakers and the music industry press.  Check out www.Airwalk.com for details on the Vic Velcro to come.

The year was 1994 and Airwalk had an instant hit with the “Jim” trio. In true irreverent skate fashion, the “Jim” styles poked fun at more traditional sports, with a hi-top made from goosepimpled basketball rubber, a fuzzy low style fashioned from tennis-ball fabric, and a golf-inspired style (not pictured) with a dimpled toe. Though these styles have been relegated to the archives, there are still some pairs in existence, that Airwalk has released now. Look out for them and worst case scenario, you will have to look on eBay.
