In a project that brought together two great artists, Ari Marcopoulus presents the factory of artist Matthew Barney, in his latest photographic project. The project was shot for the second issue of Italian magazine Studio. During Pitti Uomo in Florence, we attended the opening celebration of the outdoor exhibition, which took place in a beautiful Florentine backyard. Large scale versions of the photos were exhibited in the gardens of a villa, setting a beautiful backdrop for photography. The harsh difference between subject matter and scenery of the event, was what really impressed us the most and gave a nice focus.

Next year photographer Ari Marcopoulus will be releasing a new book entitled “Directory”, with publisher Rizzoli.

“Influential to both art and fashion, Ari Marcopoulos’s unique style of raw immediacy has made him one of the most important contemporary photographers. For thirty years, photographer Ari Marcopoulos has been pioneering contemporary photography by documenting subcultures such as skateboarders and graffiti artists, as well as landscapes and his own family and friends. Since his days printing photographs for Andy Warhol, he has amassed a huge body of work marked by its arresting and unsentimental intimacy that has been influential to the worlds of art, fashion, and photography.Bound to mimic a phone book, Ari Marcopoulos: Directory presents a collection of approximately 1,200 photographs, with curator and critic Neville Wakefield providing insightful commentary on some of Marcopoulos’s singular images. Copublished with Nieves, each book in this limited-edition series includes a print signed by the artist.”

Unfortunately the book will only release April 2011, so you still have to wait a little bit!

Incase has yet another interesting new collaboration coming up, this time working with artist Ari Marcopoulus on a camera bag.

“Designed specifically to meet the needs of Marcopoulos himself, Ari worked hand-in-hand with our designers to create a camera bag that provides fast access to cameras and equipment in a highly evolved, easy to carry ergonomic design that re-imagines the functionality and style of a camera bag.

To build a durable yet comfortable bag, we utilized heavy-duty canvas finished with a custom water-repellent coating to provide optimal weather resistance in nearly any condition. Additional coverage is found in the removable rain fly, which features a custom Marcopoulos print. Ari’s use of multiple devices at each shoot inspired the quick access point-and-shoot camera pocket with magnetic closure and the iPad interior slip pocket. Inside the bag are adjustable, padded SLR camera and lens compartments as well as a document pocket and zippered pocket for storage and organization.”

Stussy Deluxe worked with fames photographer Ari Marcopoulus on their collection lookbook for Fall/Winter 2010. We like the look of the shoot, which showcases the new Stussy Deluxe collection in different situations.

We reported and reviewed heavily the Nike Sportswear Make Something! Zine series. The last day was hosted by photographer and film maker Ari Marcopoulus.

“For the last day of the Make Something workshops, a group of some very lucky teens got to work closely with Ari Marcopoulos to create their very own Zine. The group along with the help of photographer Lele Saveri, had a chance to explore New York while taking photographs creating a memorable day for all involved.”

Glove company Celtek has been founded by pro-snowboarder Erik Leinis. They now teamed up with artist Ari Marcopoulus for their “With Help Of Artists” “WHOA) series. The photographer created a tribute to Craig Kelly, and placed a photograph on the top of the glove.

No word on the release, but we will keep you posted. More detailed images follow after the jump.

Inaugural publication by Dashwood Books, “The Chance is Higher” is a 72-page book featuring forty black and white images by photographer Ari Marcopoulos, all of which were printed on a Xerox machine. For years Marcopoulos has worked with Xeroxes as sketches for books, zines, and exhibitions. In love with the simple direct beauty of this low-fi technique, the artist turned to that medium to create this new body of work. The book is designed by the Swiss team Gavillet and Rust who worked with Marcopolous on his landmark 2005 book “Even the President of the United States Sometimes has got to Stand Naked”, their cool elegant style subtly emphasizes the directness of the work.
This hardcover edition comes in a slipcase, and is limited to 50 copies which are all signed at numbered by the artist. There is also a Deluxe Edition which is printed on a red paper stock throughout with dustjacket that folds out into a poster.
Both are now available for pre-order at Dashwood Books.

We have seen Ari Marcopoulus collaborate with Supreme before and now the photographer gets together with Huf for a New Era cap.
The photographer has worked with Warhol, Basquiat at the early stage of his career and is also known for taking pictures of Fab 5 Freddy, Run DMC and some of you might know his work from the Beastie Boys Cover of Ill Communication. As you can see, a very interesting and talented artist.
This is for sure something to look out for. No release date has been announced so far, but we will keep you posted.
