Last week we reported about David Choe being paid in 2005 in stock by Facebook, for painting murals in their offices. That stock might become worth 200 Million USD, after Facebook’s IPO and official stock market listing. Complex took a look at the richest living artists, and it is interesting to see where Choe ranks in there now.

ArtReview: The Power 100 of 2011

Every year ArtReview publishes their Power 100 List, naming the 100 most powerful figures in the world of art. Inclusions range from famous artists to prominent curators, gallerists and collectors. Ai WeiWei makes the number one spot in 2011, which is not surprising, following the big reactions to his arrest earlier this year. The Selby visits Steve Powers aka ESPO

The Selby paid a visit to artist Steve Powers aka ESPO in his studio space. It is always great getting an inside look at the spaces of creative people and especially of somebody as iconic as ESPO. The studio can be best described as a creative mess, that certainly has its own charm, with lots of art, sculptures and random inspirational pieces floating around. Clarks Originals 60th Anniversary Desert Boots Artist Auction

Clarks Originals celebrates the 60th birthday of the iconic Desert Boot with a special auction for the War Child organization, for which artists and illustrators have customized the shoe.

16 Artists, illustrators and personalities from Holland and Belgium were asked to customize the famous Clarks Originals Desert Boot. This to celebrate the 60th birthday of the crêpe sole shoe introduced by Nathan Clark. Amongst others DJ and shoe-fetishist Mr. Wix, fashion-illustrator Piet Paris and image-stylist Dyanne Beekman co-operated. These unique and arty Desert Boots will be auctioned from November 30th till December 9th 2009 via www.clarks.nl and www.clarks.be. Full profit will be donated to the charity organization War Child.

The Art of Chess

Organized by London’s RS&A, the “Art of Chess” is an ongoing touring exhibition. Leading contemporary artists (for example, Damien Hirst and Paul McCarthy take the chess board as basis for their own creative interpretation of the game. McCarthy incorporates the contents of a pantry, Hirst focuses more on the games interactions within the mind. The latest incarnation of the exhibition is currently on view in Dublin at the Sebastian Guinness Gallery. Included is a newly created short film by Gavin Turk, a still of which you can see above. The exhibition will be on view in Dublin until October 9.

Converse 1HUND(RED) Artists x Wood Wood Chuck Taylor Hi

As part of their 1HUND(RED) Artists project, Converse now got together with Danish brand Wood Wood. They worked on the Chuck Taylor Hi and gave it a very clean look. The entire upper comes in a lavender premium suede, the lining features the Wood Wood star map pattern, the tongue comes with a Wood Wood logo tag.

Otherwise the sneaker comes with the usual Converse 1HUND(RED) details, such as the red lace wholes at the top. A fantastic monochrome take on this classic sneaker by Wood Wood.

The Converse 1HUND(RED) Artists Wood Wood Chuck Taylor Hi will be released on October 1rst at the following US locations: Nom de Guerre, Dave’s Quality Meat, St. Alfred and Undefeated LA.

Converse 1HUND(RED) Artists F/W ‘08 Collection

The Fall/Holiday 2008 Converse 1HUND(RED) Artists collection spans the globe with representation from Africa, Brazil, Japan, Norway and US with a varied list of artists ranging from Brooklyn based artist Michael Schall to African graphic designer Warwick Kay. Each artist, tasked with the creation of an original design, developed unique shoes that range from playful, graphic cartoon character images to designs that emphasize the importance of the project’s mission. Other notable artists include Colletivo Design (Brazil), Grandpeople (Norway), Ginger Jones (USA), Mister Never (USA), Amy Ruppel (USA), Laura Trowbridge (USA), UPSO (USA) and Yuko Yabuki (USA).

Lightnig Bolts BMX Number Plate Exhibition

Nike worked together with Bob Haro on recreating his original BMX number plate as an artist canvas. The number plate was then given to several artists, including Michael Lau, Tet from WTAPS, Greg Higgins, Lee Basford and others to create their version of the plate. The final BMX number plates were exhibited at the Nike Beijing BMX event a couple of weeks ago.
The Shadow Conspiracy crew also participated and now put a nice feature on the exhibition online. Check out the feature here.

Arkitip Issue 46 | Beams T

Arkitip has become one of our favorite art magazines in recent years, not only because of content, but also because the overall package was always interesting and worth collecting. Now their latest issue 46 has been released and once again they put some very special together.
Issue 46 comes with 3 covers, created by Kevin Lyons, Michael Leon and ben Drury. You can get one or collect them all. The issue includes editorials from Studio von Birken/Ben Pogue, Tony Arcabascio, Nieves, C.R. Stecyk III, Frank Novak and Joshua Gregory. Each issue comes with a blank Beams T x Arkitip t-shirt and each issue comes with a heat transfer sheet designed by the cover artist, that you can then apply to the t-shirt.
A great idea. As usual the issue comes hand packaged and limited to 1500 sets.

Foreign Family Pop-Up Gallery & Summer ‘08 Preview

Foreign Family has hosted their Pop-Up Gallery this past weekend in K-Town, showing works by Mr. 44 and Johnny Punishment. They also used the occasion to givepeople a preview of their upcoming Summer ‘08 collection, which consists of mostly t-shirts as well as fitted caps. Damien Hirst x (Product) RED Auction T-Shirts

A while back we reported about a special Sotheby’s auction that was put together by Damien Hirst and all proceeds were donated to the RED (Global Fund) foundation. Works by himself, Murakami, Koons and many other high profile artists went on sale in February on the auction.
To coincide with the auction (well, in the end a little bit later), Damien Hirst also created a series of t-shirts, featuring artworks from the auction. The t-shirts come in mens and womens sizes and feature an image of the artwork on the front and the signature by the artist who contributed the work on the back, below the (Product) RED logo. Our personal favorite is the Jeff Koons t-shirt that you see here above, but many other strong ones are in the offering. Of course all proceeds from the t-shirts also go to the Global Fund.
The t-shirts are now available for 30 Pounds each on Other Criteria, Damien Hirst’s website. Check out all t-shirts in the series after the jump.

First Magazine Is Back

First Magazine was started in Kingston, Jamaica in December 2004 by a group of partners from various areas of expertise who were interested in creating a new Jamaican publication that was of a high standard.
Thanks to the the vision and assistance of Lithographic Printers in Kingston, First published four issues and 40,000 copies of the 7×7 inch magazine. The magazine was critically acclaimed and impossible to duplicate since it was structure-less; dependent on the unique and unpredictable nature of daily life as opposed to themes or subjects aimed at target groups.
After publishing the fourth issue in late 2005, First went on hiatus and the partners returned to their respective careers, until late 2007 when it was decided that First should make a return.
With a shift towards a web-driven model accompanied by an annual print issue, the new First remains true to its original intent while providing a powerful new platform for new contributors drawn from around the world–but all leading back to the foundation in Kingston.
As before, the magazine will reflect upon modern life in Jamaica, and like Jamaicans themselves, it will continually look outward – observing, absorbing and reinventing the world surrounding it.
One of the founding people behind First Magazine is Peter Dean Rickards (aka The Affflicted Yard – Interview with him here).
Make sure to have a look at the new online version of the magazine, it’s well worth it!

Nike “Being True – 22 years of American Youth” Exhbiition Los Angeles

We announced the Nike “Being True – 22 years of American Youth” exhibition in Los Angeles a couple of days ago. Thanks to Eddie Cruz, we can give you a look at the works on display.

Pepsi Artist Series by ARTCO

While the art and design worlds are trying to reconcile their differences and work together, Cary Lietzes of ARTCO is working to bring artists and major corporations closer, by creating branding that is visually stimulating and unique. Design has a long history of struggle with the mass market but Lietzes has pioneered a fresh approach to the subject and carved out an intricate niche for herself and the artists and brands with which she works.
Using her knowledge of fashion, marketing and publishing, Lietzes recognized the need for new blood in the marketing world and identified current artists whose forward thinking and creativity suited these needs. Hence, ARTCO’s current project with Pepsi is not surprising, but is refreshing.
ARTCO has assembled 10 artists to design the Pepsi cans for the company’s 4 biggest markets. The 10 different designs will be sold worldwide, with the new designs rolling out in select countries before expanding to more locations throughout the year.

Artist iGoogle Museum

Zozo has launched the Artist iGoogle Museum, which is in fact a virtual museum where various artists provided background designs for the iGoogle desktop. You can download the backgrounds for free at Zozo. Participating artists included Bape, Tado, Yurika, Airside, Hysteric Glamour and many others.

Adidas x Upper Playground Collection

Adidas and Upper Playground got together to work on a series of sneakers under the titel – “You Ain’t Got to Lie to Kick It”.
So far they have revealed three sneakers out of the collection. These have been designed by David Choe, Sam Flores and Aesop Rock. There will be one more to complete the series. That we will show you as soon as possible. There is no set release date so far, but we’ll keep you posted on the project.

Arkitip Issue 45 – Evan Hecox

For Issue 45, Arkitip got for the second time together with artist Evan Hecox. The artist also chose to include the works of Cody Hudson and Todd St. John. The issue is more of a catalogue than a periodical and is printed in a limited numbered edition of overall 200.
Each issue includes one signed 9 x 12 In. 2 color silk screen print on 120 lbs. cover stock. All packaged neatly in a hand stamped, string and button envelope.

Rossignol – Seven Artistic Sins Collection

We present you an interesting project that Rossignol will be launching towards the end of the month.
Using skate legends turned graphic artists, Rossignol has created the Seven Artistic Sins (SAS) collection canvassed with artistic interpretations of the seven deadly sins as imagined by iconic boardsports legends Andy Howell, Steve Caballero, Caia Koopman, Mr. Jago, Andrew Pommier, Will Barras and Squindo, whose collective (Spacejunk) work has covered skateboards, snowboards, surf boards and album covers for much of the last decade. The collection comes in a limited edition and will have a 7 year lifespan, with exclusive early availability at renowned board sports retailer Evo.
