After Shepard Fairey and Os Gemeos, it was the turn of Barry McGee to paint the Houston Street Mural and the outcome is raw and somewhat unexpected, yet with a very strong message lying underneath it.

“In an amazing twist, life imitated art in New York Sunday night when Barry McGee and crew descended on the Houston Street wall. Beginning at midnight, McGee, together with longtime collaborator Josh Lazcano (Amaze), began a massive spray-painting spree, bombarding the surface with hundreds of simple red tags. Working through the cover of night, the team created the ultimate graffiti writer’s roll call and a strangely beautiful, if not challenging piece of commissioned abstract art.

By 4am (with some added contributions from Chino) Twist and Amaze had completely filled in the wall with the names and crews of graffiti writers past and present.”

The scene was very busy the entire night, you can read up on the entire story over at TheArtCollectors.

After the jump you can see images of the progress of the mural, as well as the completed piece.

The Creative Lives met up with one of the most celebrated artist of our young generation – Barry McGee.

“One of the most influential artists of our generation Barry McGee was recently asked to reinstall a work of his at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art for their 75th Anniversary retrospective. What ended up happening was an installation that not only incorporated the original work created in 1996 but also samples of new work created right before the installation. In this piece we talk with Barry about the preservation of impermanent art and how reinvention keeps him excited.”

Enjoy!

The concept is to make the art of emerging and established artists alike, affordable and available to the public. Each piece is delivered as a complete package for the consumer and includes ready-to-apply art piece and tools for installation. Obsessed with process, Bodega creates high quality, layered die-cut vinyl art editions; representing some of the most captivating artists of our generation.

Using eco-friendly inks and vinyl to create layered die-cut, gallery quality vinyl that cab be applied to any flat surface. The vinyl is low-tack and can be removed without damaging the wall; however, is non-collectible as the art work cannot be reapplied to a surface after removal.

The first drop of Bodega indoor art includes work by Barry McGee and Michael Leon.

The trio listed above is showing at Circle Culture Gallery in Berlin starting today, April 9, 2009. The exhibition has been curated by Aaron Rose, who has this to say about the assembled works:

This exhibition serves to focus on the recent artistic output by three underground heroes from the worlds of skateboarding, graffiti and punk. Even though each of these artists has now firmly established themselves in the world of contemporary art, there are still common themes between them that hail back to their subcultural roots. It could be described primarily as an overriding sense of concern for and representation of the downtrodden, the outsider, the anti-hero. McGee’s sad, sullen faces and neon-colored geometric panels reflect the archetypal image of man overpowered by omnipresent media, Templeton’s portraits of suburban youths perfectly illustrate the harsh alienation of teenage life, while Pettibon’s drawings and paintings focus sharply on issues of personal/social unrest, life during war and the constant power struggle between a man and his destiny. The fact that this is the first time an exhibition has featured all three artists in such direct proximity to each other will be an interesting statement not only on each artists’ individual style, but also the unique similarities that run through all of their works.

We chatted with Rose last week, check that and a preview of the exhibition here.

Barry McGee, Ed Templeton and Raymond Pettibon are pioneers and icons of the contemporary urban art movement. Their work can be found in the collections of major museums and has been shown at large exhibitions and biennales worldwide, but all three have repeatedly emphasised their roots in youth subculture – in the worlds of skateboarding, graffiti, punk and hip-hop. They are joined by an overriding interest in portraying the underdogs, outcasts and anti-heroes of society. Curator Aaron Rose, whose urban art documentary Beautiful Losers is currently touring the world to enthusiastic reviews, is showing these three sought-after artists in the intimate atmosphere of a Berlin gallery. The direct proximity of their works not only allows us to draw interesting conclusions about each artist’s style, but also underscores their unique similarities.
