Analog Clothing, Aloha Army, and Kauai photographer Mike Coots joined forces to create one gnarly boardshort rooted in Hawaiian culture. Adorned with photos of local surfers, friends and family throwing up “shakas” the shorts feature photos shot by Coots at Pipemasters in the winter of 2008, and in Kauai over the past year. The shaka is the ultimate symbol of aloha and local culture in Hawaii. It is a common greeting that some say is the physical manifestation of aloha. The meanings are multiple: thank you, take it easy, hello, and good-bye.

An early release of the Aloha Army x Analog Lewers Boardshorts will take place at Aloha Army on Thursday, October 15, 2009, where the shorts will be available exclusively until February 2010.

Previewed in Vegas, we now have the official info on the first collaboration between DC and renowned Singaporean design collective RoyaleFam. The co-op boasts three shoes, a pair of board shorts, two t-shirts and two hats all designed by SBTG. The design inspiration comes from the legendary skateboard crew called the “Circus of Mutants” who were famous in Singapore in the 80’s and 90’s. While SBTG himself was not a member of this crew he was chosen to tell the story of the “Circus”. This crew included “The Fly” (along with other local legends “The Bat”, “Scorpion”, and “Frankenstein”) and as such the first installment of the “Circus of Mutants” is based on Singaporean legend Lucas Ng – “The Fly”. The collection will officially hit select skateboarding stores worldwide in January 2010.

Working once again with famed Singapore-based sneaker customizer, SBTG, DC Life presents a capsule collection of collaborative gear under the Royalefam umbrella. Inspired by SBTG’s childhood skate gang, Circus of Mutants, the shoes were done up in a black and green colorway with familiar SBTG details and an abundance of Fly imagery. Don’t quote us on this, but apparently, each skater in the crew had their own nickname, with SBTG’s being “The Fly.” The capsule release includes 5-panel cap, snapback, boardshort and t-shirt components. The boardshorts stand out as especially fly to us. Hits select accounts for Spring 2010.

Quiksilver got together with Japanese retailer Beauty & Youth. The outcome are two sets of board shorts, coming with matching tote bags. The designs hint at the beginnings of surf culture and certainly have a nostalgic look to themselves.

LA’s Crooks & Castles got together with Billabong to work on some boardshorts. The boardshorts feature a Crooks all-over print with trademark graphics. They are now available in the Crooks & Castles flagship store in Los Angeles.

Another interesting collaboration is coming out of Japan. New high end label, Uniform Experiment, created by Sophnet and Fragment Design, has gotten together with Quiksilver to work on the Culture Boardshorts. They come in a black/white and a black/black colorway and feature a small print on the front a a large one going over the back.
The shorts will go on sale at Sophnet stores as of May 17th.
