arkitip issue 46 x beams t
Arkitip has become one of our favorite art magazines in recent years, not only because of content, but also because the overall package was always interesting and worth collecting. Now their latest issue 46 has been released and once again they put some very special together.
Issue 46 comes with 3 covers, created by Kevin Lyons, Michael Leon and ben Drury. You can get one or collect them all. The issue includes editorials from Studio von Birken/Ben Pogue, Tony Arcabascio, Nieves, C.R. Stecyk III, Frank Novak and Joshua Gregory. Each issue comes with a blank Beams T x Arkitip t-shirt and each issue comes with a heat transfer sheet designed by the cover artist, that you can then apply to the t-shirt.
A great idea. As usual the issue comes hand packaged and limited to 1500 sets.

Storefront: The Disappearing Faces of New York City

06 May 2008, 11.00 | Posted in Books & Magazines | No comments »

storefront by gingko press - highsnobietyAnother new book from Gingko Press is Storefront. The built environment that allows for the formation and development of street culture, from art to skating, is a constantly evolving landscape. While some streets may never change aesthetically, moods do. Tenants change. Shopkeepers move on. Photographers James and Karla Murray have diligently documented the streets of New York for years. They’re interested was sparked by grafitti, leading to two books Broken Windows and Buring New York. Storefronts, moves away from street art, to the look of the streets themselves. Awnings, signage, window display. The changing faces of city blocks. And, also, those that have remained stagnant for generations. Augmenting the photographs are interviews with store owners.

Alife LA Presents Eric Haze – “Nov York City”

29 April 2008, 02.28 | Posted in Art | No comments »

alife la presents eric haze nov york city - highsnobiety
Alife LA presents Nov York City, an exhibition of new works by Eric Haze, based on Dumar Brown’s novel The World Screaming Nov and featuring the limited-edition collaborative set The World Screaming Nov. A notable figure in the design and fashion community over the last few decades, New York artist Haze was commissioned by Alife to create an installation specifically for their Los Angeles space. The show will consist of eight archival silkscreen works on canvas. Nov York City represents Haze’s continued return to the fine art world, including recent exhibitions and installations at select galleries worldwide. This will be a rare opportunity to view and purchase the artist’s work in Los Angeles. The exhibition marks a first-time collaboration between Haze, Brown and Alife: The World Screaming Nov limited-edition set. The set includes a signed copy of Brown’s novel and a custom Alife t-shirt designed by Eric Haze. Limited to 192 pieces, the set will be available at all Alife flagship locations in Los Angeles, New York, Vancouver and Tokyo and is priced at $75. Nov York City is the first in a series of art exhibitions to be held at Alife’s Los Angeles space in the Fairfax District. Open to the public, the reception for Nov York City will take place on Saturday, May 17 from 7 to 10pm.

Known for his iconic graphics that have transformed the streets of New York City as well as defined the visual language of hip hop bands such as the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy and LL Cool J, Haze communicates with his audience through a variety of mediums. For Haze, the exhibition continues to balance the elements of his work as a graphic designer and fine artist. The site-specific installation represents “a continuation of the type-based, freestyle lettering work that I have been developing recently, playing on words, also using scale and repetition within the application of the written word.” His custom graphic for the limited-edition Nov York City t-shirt (print is shown on the above pic) is a one-off newly created handletter design that relates to the collaborative project as a whole.

The concept for Nov York City was inspired by Dumar Brown’s third title, The World Screaming Nov, which will be released by Brown’s publishing company Newkirk Éditeur. Having featured the Nov series in its New York location for several years, Alife partnered with Brown on his upcoming release and commissioned Haze to illustrate select quotes from the book. The three creative entities teamed up to produce the Nov York City exhibition and limited-edition set, which symbolizes a unique first-time collaboration for all.

Banksy’s Bristol – Home Sweet Home

08 April 2008, 20.16 | Posted in Books & Magazines | No comments »

banksy's bristol home sweet home book - highsnobiety
Home Sweet Home is a celebration of Banksy’s street art in his home city of Bristol. This book places him in the context of 3D, John Nation from the Barton Hill Settlement, Inkie, Nick Walker and the other artists and musicians who were instrumental in linking Bristol to the original New York hip hop scene.
It is the most revealing account of Banksy’s formative years and contains more than one hundred images of his Bristol art, as well as pictures of Banksy at work, many of which have never been published before.
Steve Wright, Venue magazine’s Art Editor, traces Banksy’s roots back to the rave culture of the Nineties and draws a rounded picture of an artist who is most famous for anonymous.

The book, which has been released by Tanget Books, shows on 104 pages Banksy’s early works as well as a lot of material from the past days. For fans and critics this book is a great completion to the title “Wall and Piece”.
Most interesting we find the discussions in the book of the demographic that is mainly hyped about his work and whether or not he will stay this hyped in the art scene. Opinions differ very much and only time will tell who is right.

ari marcopoulus the chance is higher book - highsnobiety
Inaugural publication by Dashwood Books, “The Chance is Higher” is a 72-page book featuring forty black and white images by photographer Ari Marcopoulos, all of which were printed on a Xerox machine. For years Marcopoulos has worked with Xeroxes as sketches for books, zines, and exhibitions.
